embroidery

My apologies for the dull title.  I sat here staring into space trying to think of something imaginative, but no, didn't happen.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is WIP #10 - "vintage" embroidery, completed and crossed off the list.  I found the pattern on Flickr a long time ago - here.  I started stitching, but just stopped.  I decided it was time to continue.

I used Perle cotton number 8 for all of it, so was a bit limited as to the colours I could use as I only had a certain range.  I did try to vary my stitches though.  The leaves are done in fly stitch, the flowers, body of the bird and heart are all satin stitch.

The flourishes to either side of the heart are raised bar stitch, this was a new stitch to me, found in the fab stitching book my MIL bought me for Christmas - Stitchopedia.  The heart is filled with a simple latice with cross stitches at the joining points.  I had picked out a more elaborate stitch, but the lattice ended up too closely spaced.  I'm not sure about my choice of colours for this part, but it's done now!

The main body of the bird is satin stitch, with the tail feathers in fly stitch and the wing another latice over a base of satin stitch.  I used to hate satin stitch, but this time I started with an outline in split stitch and found it much easier to do.

The hoop is in place and has a felt backing, ready to hang in my gallery.  I was going to cover the frame with washi tape, but the wood showed through - I think it needs painting white first, but can't see that happening any time soon!

Measure Twice...

... a lesson I clearly have not learnt!  Duff, this post is for you.

And Sew On button

I've been threatening to try paper piecing/foundation piecing for ages, so decided to join in the paper piecing BOM over at Quiet Play.  Kirsty is very generously offering each block for free for a month, so get over there if you want to join in.  All the blocks are on a sewing theme and can be made into a little wall hanging for my craft room, much more achievable than a full quilt.

It did not go well.  There was this incident above where I sewed the piece on the wrong way, when folded back it covered the fabrics already there.

It looks like it's fine from the back... but when you see the front, you see it's not!

See?

Ooops.  I really struggled with this, the pieces of fabric were flapping all over the place, I couldn't remember which way to fold them, I cut the pieces too short and placed them badly....

It's not over.  Paper piecing, you have not won.

3 down, millions to go

Good morning ladies.  I had yesterday afternoon off work to go to the hospital to see a consultant neurologist.  I've been asking the doctor for a referal to the migraine clinic for years and finally got one.  Sort of.  This "doctor" has advised me to stop taking painkillers.  Now, I know that painkillers can cause headaches so try not to take them where I can.  That doesn't include migraines.  If you've ever had a migraine, I'm pretty sure your mouth will be hanging open in shock at this suggestion.  If you haven't, forget headaches, migraines are on a completely different spectrum.  Needless to say, I will not be taking his advise.  My actual response to this suggestion was "and have you ever had a migraine yourself"?  He had the decency to look sheepish.

Anyway, you're not here to hear about my broken head, you're hear to see if I've messed up any projects recently (hi Duff!), sorry to disappoint.  I have, however, made more progress on my Wipocalypse Challenge.

WIP #17 - I first posted about wiggly bags in August,  so this is a 5-month WIP.  Wiggly bags are for children in hospital to wear to put their Hickman line in.  I don't know much more than that, but they are needed and I was happy to oblige.

When I first started making these bags, I cut out a load of fabric and was determined to use it all.  This final 4 (above) will, hopefully, be suitable for boys.  I've now finished all the 6" squares I cut.

I made 18 wiggly bags in total, these were asked for back in July by Emily of Strawberry Patch.  She'll get a surprise when I get these posted!

WIP #16 - These napkins first made an appearance in October, so only 3 months for this one!

Having said that, they only needed re-hemming and it took me all of about 10 minutes!

When I made them originally, the first two had terrible corners, the second two had successful corners.  Thinking I'd learnt how to do them properly, I unsewed the first two and put them in a pile for months on end.  When I came back to it, I couldn't remember what I'd done to make the second set so nice, so these look pretty much how they did before I unsewed them!

But never mind, at least it's another WIP crossed off.  So, that's the bathroom curtain, the napkins and the wiggly bags.  I've also finished an embroidered piece which I'll show you at or after the weekend when I'll next see daylight, and I'm pretty close to finishing another project!  4 out of 64 in the first 7 days...

I do hope this momentum lasts.

Bathroom curtain is finished!

Now, before I start talking about the momentus bathroom curtain that I've been rambling on about for months, let me show you how our bathroom looked.

I bought the house 6 years ago, it had been a student house for years and so was badly decorated and grimy.  We've started doing it up, but it's expensive and we have no money, so it's going slowly.  Check out the brown suite.  Seriously, who buys a brown suite??  Also note the grimy cabinet with chipped glass doors.  The bottom of the mirror was at the correct height to reflect my forehead!

Yucky stained ceiling (we did use to clean it often!) and horrible light fixture.

Grimy grouting and tiles that always look dirty, even when they're not, due to the horrible pattern.  You can also make out the mis-matched trim on the bath.

I bought this blind for a fiver from IKEA when I first moved in, just to give us some privacy.  It's horrible and dirty and marked.

The bathroom is tiny, the door opens directly onto the boiler-housing cupboard so you have to squeeze past.  The yellowish walls don't help matters.

Mr CA started by replacing the boiler cabinet doors which were ancient and chipped to show the green paint underneath.  Everywhere we've decorated in our house we've found layers of white gloss, then a layer or two of green.  Clearly at some stage in its 130-year old history, the entire house was painted green.

A couple of months ago we painted.  We painted the walls and ceiling white and the tiles white too.  How much cleaner does that look, even with the gross brown suite?  I removed the horrible cabinet and put this little one in its place.  There are to be shelves next to it.  One day, when Mr CA gets round to it.

I even Mod Podged some bathroom-themed fabric inside the cupboard!

The door could do with a coat of paint, but it does look a lot better.  I also want to get some new shower and light pulls and fixtures, I just keep forgetting.

.

Oh, I wanted to show you that the tile paint isn't brilliant - it does come off in patches at some points, and I'd advise you not to scrub it!

A new clock, clean white walls and a book on Photography for Crafters!  Remember I added the crochet sail boats?

You can read about them here if you are so inclined.

That just left the window undressed.  For months.  And months.  Enter WIP 15

So, remember back in June when I started the granny square blocks for a bathroom curtain?

Then I showed you the otherday that I'd got this far?

I added some sashing.  Wider at the sides as the dimensions were a bit odd.  I then had to piece a backing as the piece of white fabric I had left was just not quite big enough!

I sewed it all together and then noticed this.  Ooops.  But, finally, it was finished.

Excuse the dark photo, it's very hard to take a photo of a dark room in Winter when the thing you are taking a photo of covers the window!

I love it!  Yes, that is the backing you can see through the curtain.  I also noticed that when the sun is very bright, you can see the threads and bits of lint trapped inside the two layers.

I had the brilliant idea of interfacing the front to make it less see-through.  Didn't work.

This is the back, I forgot to take a photo before I hung it but as it's visible through the front, I think you get the idea!

Spot the mistake?  Yep, I put the front on upside down.  Those birds are the only directional prints and I got them upside down.

To make the curtain I made the back and the front, interfaced the front and sewed them right sides together, trapping some tabs in the top.  I then turned it through and top stitched the gap closed.

As I finished, I realised that's not how you make curtains.  Ooops.

Oh yee of little faith - and why you are probably right

I started the year by telling you about my resolution to get through all my WIPs and kits and planned projects.  You responded by telling me I'm crazy!  I'm not mad, I completely agree BUT I have started...

I started this bathroom curtain back in June!  I can't believe it was so long ago.  I've been working on it....  Despite having cut out enough squares for a King size quilt, it will only be 3 blocks x 3 blocks.

The giant granny is an even older WIP, having been started way back in July 2011!  Oh, you will be finished blanky.  I'm now on round 50 and I think I've got enough wool for another 10-15 rounds before the border, each round now takes about an hour!  I couldn't remember what hook I was using so started using a 4mm, I think it might have been a 3.5mm as the middle is definitely tighter than the edge.

I can't find my original post for the next item, but I had taken photos so I think I'd written a post.  I've finished off the pink flower to the left and done all the blue "bits" so far.  I have done more than this now as I took this photo a few days ago.  I did this stitching straight after Christmas but then put it aside as I wasn't sure what to do with the "under-bits" under the blue...  It's done and I'll show you an update soon.

Considering I had all week off last week you might think I'd have made more progress, but alas, this little girl got in the way.

Excuse the dark photo, it was taken in my hall which has no natural light.  And that's a piece of banana in case you're wondering.  On Thursday I noticed she wasn't eating, VERY unusual for this little greed-bag.  Off to the vets who said it was her teeth so back to the vets on Friday for an operation to file them down.  She's fine now but caused me some worry, along with some quality time keeping an eye on her.  We have to do that in the hall as she hates the floor in the living room, dining room and kitchen (laminate/lino) - she's no good at skating!

I would like to tell you I've vacuumed the dirty brown carpet since taking this photo, but it wouldn't be true.  I haven't.

A post that could be full of obscenities

So, it's Saturday afternoon.  I go to meet my parents for lunch in a small town called West Bridgford.  We park in the local council-run car park.  I can pay for anything between 2 and 24 hours parking.  I only have £1 in change which buys me 2 hours parking.

After lunch we decide to look round the shops.  I go back and pay another £1 for a further 2 hours parking.  The times overlap by 15 minutes.

I get back to the car after shopping to find I've been given a parking fine of £50.  Apparently, in this large public car park which was half empty, it's illegal to buy 2 hours parking for £1, then return and pay a further £1 for 2 more hours.  I could have bought a 4 hour ticket for £1.50, but I didn't.  I gave them an extra 50p.

They fined me.  £50.

F%^&*$g b£"$%^d w&^%*r t*&ts.

1st Jan - boiler breaks down.  No heat until the 7th, if they can fix it when they come back.

3rd Jan - poorly rabbit.  4 trips to the vet and £160 fees.

5th Jan - £50 parking ticket for not parking illegally.

I hate this year.  2012 was awful.  2013 is going to be even worse.

More hefalumps

I feel like I'm always making elephants, but in fact I've only actually made 2!  Well, now I've made 4.  These were started before the craft fair, but when I realised the table was chocka, I put them on hold.  On the 27th we had company and I'd finished sewing the presents I had left to do (for people I hadn't seen yet!) and I was flailing around looking for something to do with my hands as we chatted (I've found people don't much like it if I use my hands for picking my nose whilst chatting ;0) *), and found these sewn-but-not-stuffed hefalumps.

Why hefalumps?  No idea, probably the same reason we call ambulances andybeasts in our family.  Madness.  It's hereditory.  The pattern can be purchased here, it's by the talented Retro Mama.

This one is made using the Riley Blake Sugar and Spice fabric I won a while back.  I think it would do for a boy or a girl.  Or is it too girly?

This one is made using some Tanya Whelan fabric (possibly) and a dotty pink from my stash.  She's destined to live with my cousin's baby when she arrives in the next couple of weeks.  I'm not sure that I told you what happened with my cousin at the time.  Early in her pregnancy she was very ill and got admitted into hospital and put into a comma in intensive care.  She was there for 6 weeks.  She had test after test after test and finally they discovered it was a form of encephalytis.  It was a miracle that she came round, but we were warned her recovery would take years.  It took her about 2 months, and that being heavily pregnant!  You'd never know she'd been ill to look at her now, she's amazing and so excited about this, her first baby.

This isn't the first time I've used this pattern, I made Brian with the pattern too.  So why did I think I'd made so many elephants?  I mean, where did I think they were?  You'd notice if you had a lot of elephants living in your house...

* I don't really pick my nose in company.
