Mad Writing Skills

Have you seen the new series over at Mad in Crafts?

You may not know this about me, but I used to be an English teacher.  The kind that teaches English as a foreign language.  I've always been a bit of a stickler for grammar and so I was chuffed when the series was announced.  Seriously, bad grammar annoys me!

And guess what?  (That was bad grammar - you shouldn't start a sentence with "and") the first question she's answered was mine!  I asked about the word "addicting" which I see everywhere in Blogland but I swear is not a word.  Turns out it's US English.  You still won't find me saying it!

  1. Lol, about your 'and' comment. I still tell my offspring that I'm not listening to them when they start a sentence with 'but' because it's a joining word between two phrases so either put a phrase in front or don't say it at all. What I term 'proper' english doesn't seem to be taught in Australian schools any more. They seem more interested in drama....does anyone else realise that if you research Shakespeare he invented a lot of words that weren't even in common speech in his era?? Ha ha, off my soapbox now :P.

  2. I had no idea you taught English as a foreign language. My cousin taught in Japan for seven years. I was a journalist for 20 years. Grammar and I are well acquainted. The one I seriously take issue with at the moment is when people say "less" instead of "fewer".
Have you read Eats Shoots and Leaves? It is a funny, funny book!
    Cheers!

  3. My English skills have dropped dramatically - since the advent of the internet, I don't seem to read as much as I used to! Bad SPELLING annoys me no end...I used to be a proofreader, lol.

  4. Yes bad grammar seriously annoys me as well but I'm sure I'm no where near perfect. Hope you don't readmy blog and cringe at my grammar:)

  5. I don't like bad grammar but I use bad grammar constantly! It's hard not too.

Now I'm curious about "addicting" what word do you use for it there?
