Damn those dogs

Feed dogs that is.  Yesterday I was having a lovely time sewing.  I'd done some blocks (more about that later) and had moved on to making a present for my nephew's first birthday.  I thought about free motion embroidering a design, so swapped my foot and lowered the feed dogs.  I had a play but changed my mind.  Swapped the foot back, lifted up the feed dogs...

Wait.  They haven't moved?  Wiggle the switch a few times... nothing.

Take off the needle plate and manually lift the dogs.  Put the plate back on, sew, birdsnest.  Fabric sucked into needle plate.  Whirring.  Bad.

Broken.

What the hell am I going to do????

Wendy, have you lowered the feed dogs on this machine before? tHE REASON I ask is because when I got my last machine I couldn't understand why they weren't coming back up as my machine before that did it mechanically. What I had to do was start stitching and they came up automatically, it could be that forcing them up has caused the problem so if this might be the case, try lowering them again and do a couple of stitched after moving the switch back to up position and see if that works?

Disaster! My machine broke last year and I was lost without it while it was getting fixed!

What the heck are feed dogs? Is it something on a sewing machine?

Wendy,my machine is like Kerry's,you have to start sewing before the dogs come back up.

Hope this is the case for your machine as well...

I was going to say what Kerry said - sometimes you have to engage the machine before the dogs will come back up ...

Kerry said it - most of them only come back up when you start sewing. If it were me I would turn the machine off, leave it for a few minutes and then turn back on and start sewing - if that doesn't work, put them up or down (whatever is the opposite to where they are when you first turn it on and start sewing again. Repeat if necessary - hope it's sorted out by now anyway!

There must have been something in the air that day because the exact same thing happened to me last week! I'm glad I came here and read the comments. Mine "miraculously" fixed itself when I turned my machine off in disgust and lo and behold when I turned it on again, they came up when I ran a test swatch through. Now I know why. These fancy electronic machines are hard to understand sometimes. Glad to know I wasn't the only one out there about to call my machine mechanic!

Thanks for stopping by my blog today. It was nice meeting you!
