coffee matt

I actually made this coffee matt weeks ago.  I tend to take photos of whatever I've made or is in progress at the weekends when there is some natural light as I work full time.  I upload them to the computer and drop them into blank posts - you may have realised I tend to only blog about one thing at a time.  I find it easier to find things I've blogged about that way (after all this is an on-line making diary as much as anything) and I find other people's posts with multiple projects/subjects hard to digest sometimes.  I then schedule the posts, roughly 2 days apart, and then write them as and when I get a chance.  I'm not sure why I suddenly felt the need to share that with you, but I did!

Anyway, coffee mat.  My coffee machine has a little hole in the bottom of the tray.  There is another tray that fits inside but it means my little jug doesn't fit under the nozzle so I take it out.  Hence the need for a mat (I also stuff a j-cloth inside but it doesn't stop a bit of mess).  I made some a while ago, but they're all stained now so I'm replacing them.

I found this block on Pinterest, I just had a look at my boards and can't find it, apologies if I've used your tutorial and not credited you, though I didn't use the tutorial, I could see how to make it from the picture.  I drew a quick sketch and coloured it  in to follow as I sewed.

I had a charm pack of Java, I've had it for years, since I first started sewing, and decided it was time to use it.  I like the little coffee bean print.

This was pretty easy to make and my points aren't too bad!  I sewed it right-sides together with a piece cut out of an old tea towel, then turned - no binding.  It's 12" square.

Some quick straight line quilting either side of the seams to keep the layers together.

And we're done!  Only problem...

...with the coffee machine on top, you can barely see my lovely piecing!

Yes, that's one of the trials of doing projects that are intended to be useful. You'll just have to regard it in the same way a a really lovely lining on a coat - as a sort of secret pleasure...

Perfect fabric for the job! Shame you can't see it - maybe you need matching coasters or something?

Love it! You found the perfect project for that fabric. I like that you used a tea towel for the backing. Your recent posts have inspired me to make more quilts for my kitchen and house. I might not hide this one under the coffee maker.

It looks complicated at first glance but the way you designed the block, any quilter that's been making blocks for very long could figure it out. I may use that block for Sunshine block lotto on Yahoo. I'm always looking for something a bit different than what I've done. Thanks!

It makes me a little sad that your adorable work will be hidden and eventually stained! Seriously, I'd pin this up on my wall to look at and tuck some random fat quarter under the coffee machine (You know - the mauve & moss green one with paisley that seemed like SUCH a great deal at the time?) Your points look great and the simple quilting finish is just right!

That's really cute! I like the colors and the design. We have a messy coffee maker too but I'd be afraid to use something so cute and chance it getting stained. Have a great weekend!

The perfect fabric for the coffee mat, you will just have to make another to show off your piecing skills :)

Your lovely stitching may be invisible to random strangers and people in far off lands, but you and your loyal readers will know it's there, and will appreciate it, lol!

Very sweet! I think it should be a little wall hanging behind the coffee maker, or sit in front of the coffee maker - but don't hide it beneath it! Those fabrics are too cute! Chrissie x

fingers crossed you don not get spills on this mat as it is so pretty. Interesting to read about how you blog, I am never sure whether a few individual bogs or one big one is best think maybe you are right the way you do it,

The perfect fabric, Wendy and a great mat. You'll just have to make another one that won't be hidden.

Pretty block: it's a pity you can't see it when in use though. Maybe you can make some matching kitchen accessories (po-holders?) to go with it.

um maybe you should use such a pretty for a mug rug instead, so you can look at it. A plain piece of one fabric won't be missed under a pot. LeeAnna Paylor

LOVE LOVE LOVE this block and how well you executed it... I also love it's purpose... my coffee pot underneath seems to stay a mess even though I try to keep it clean and tidy! With a dish rag on the back all that fabric will absorb those drips and just wash away! Lovely idea :) Thanks for sharing at Bee Social! Kathi

That's a great idea for organizing posts, I tend to wrote them first based on what I'm working on then try to get some time and light for pictures.

It is really sweet and I love that you used coffee bean print for it! How appropriate! But really it is too pretty to use as intended! You should show it off!
