Not number 125

As I was finishing up this mosaic, which is from a kit, Mr CA came over and told me in a worried voice that I'd done it all wrong.  My heart plummeted.  He pointed to the box of the kit and said "you've put number 4"

Mosaic House Number Kit

Ha ha ha Mr CA.

WIP #26 is officially finished. It was not without it's issues.  I loved laying the tiles, the 4 took ages to get right, but the rest of it went pretty quickly.  I just did small sections at a time to give the glue time to set so I didn't then move everything I'd done.

Then came the time to apply the grout.  I could NOT get it to mix to a paste.  It was watery and thin so in the end I donned some rubber gloves, poured it on and spread it around with my hands.  This (above) is the result.

I should have nipped to Hobbycraft (10 mins drive from my house, if that) to buy some more.  I didn't.  I stole some from my tray mosaic kit.  It's not white.  This is how it turned out (above), so I had to spend some time rubbing quite hard with a damp cloth to get the lumps off!

And here's the finished number plate.  Not too bad.  It would look better with white grout, but considering this will be on the wall outside the house, I don't think it will even be obvious in a couple of weeks time.

The conclusion?  I LOVED this.  I'm going to do the tray kit next, then I think I'll be ready to move on to my own design and working with some other materials.

Oh my you have a Hobbycraft so close I'm so Jealous. If I had money I would open a craft shop, there is so little in Birmingham or I am just not looking in the right places, even finding material is a nightmare.

Sorry back to the mosaic, I think it looks really good, I quite like the cream grouting, sort of gives it depth, can't wait to see the tray.

I love visiting your blog I never know what craft I am going to see next.

The postman will have no trouble finding you!

It looks great, my hubby has the tray kit (unopened!) maybe I should start hassling him to have a go at it.

I think it looks really good :) From the photo you can't tell that the grout isn't white.

So Mr. CA didn't realize that was supposed to represent your house number? lol I love how it came out. I've wanted to try mosaic but haven't. I bought some grout but it's black. I didn't realize it when I purchased it.

I actually like the look you achieved with the second grout... it gives it that weathered look it that would take months to occur naturally.

It looks great. It's like doing embroidery with stone. I was going to say cross stitch but it's more free form than that. You will feel so proud whenever you arrive at your front door. I know I do when my house number welcomes me home!

White grout wouldn't stay white outside for very long, so I think you made a wise choice with the more "antique" colour. DESIGN DECISION! :D LOL @ Mr. CA --- but shouldn't the number read ... c/o? :D

I wouldn't worry about the grout either, it looks fantastic. Mosaic is a craft I haven't tried but so want to one day.
Cheers, Anita.

What a great finish, if you move, you'll have to make sure you go to another number 4!
I used to love doing mosaics with the children, I always dreamed of doing one for the garden. Maybe one day

I think that's really classy. Love the little blue dotty border top and bottom. I think it looks great with that colour grouting - it's good to see the individual tiles. Really lovely - I feel quite inspired to have a go!
