He's here and it's finished!

Jacob Theodore William was born this morning, Saturday 3rd March, at 9:44am weighing 8 pounds and 7 ounces.  He is, judging by the photos as I haven't met him yet, quite the most beautiful baby ever born.  No, I'm not biased, he is.  For those who may be new to my blog, or not paying attention, this is my nephew, first child of my only brother.  I'm so proud I could burst.
In a bizarre case of coincidence, as I got the text, then the call, I was taking photographs of his quilt!  I thought I should probably show you.  Now, these first photos are a bit rubbish, I took them on Thursday evening before putting it in the washing machine, the photos of the washed quilt are better, promise.

So here's the finished, bound, machine and hand quilted quilt in all its glory.  Warning, there will now follow approximately 46 million photos of this quilt.  I reserve the right to publish them all as it is my first ever quilt.

The binding went well, thanks to some hints from the lovely ladies over at Brit Quilt who put me straight with my stupid idea that I should stop sewing the binding a bindings-width from the corner...  no wonder I always ended up with holey edges!

It's not perfect, it wouldn't win any quilt awards, but then neither would my piecing, but it's perfect enough.

The corners went reasonably well.

And I love the look of the machine quilting side by side with the hand quilting.  It was with great trepidation that I put my precious quilt into the washing machine...

I was nervous for the next hour and a half as I washed it, then tumble dried it but wow!  I love the way it turned out.  I love it even more than I did before!

None of the hand quilting came undone and it's so soft and snuggly.

I took some more close-ups of the binding in the better light this morning.

I'm not allowed to centre that photo.  If I do, it has to go right at the top of the post.  Blogger says.  Here's the back.

Nope, no more photo centering.  Here's a close up of the back.  Bored yet?

The only issue I had was finishing the binding by machine, when you get back to your starting point.  I know how to do it, but I couldn't.  I tried and failed 3 times and in the end just folded it over and sewed it!  It's a bit lumpy at that point, but I don't think Jacob will mind.

 So, what do you think?

Hi Wendy,
Congratulations on your new nephew and on your own firstborn 'child' - a lovely and great quilt!!!
I'm not sure I'd bother watching 46 million photos of it (I'm lazy, I know!!!) - but I salute all kinds of bragging - you can be proud of this!
Me - I'haven't finished my first quilt (yet) - too many UFO's as you know - thanks for playing along in my Give-Away :-)

Jacob's quilt is gorgeous, and he and his mommy and daddy will love their beautiful quilt made by Auntie Wendy.

Congratulations and maple syrup hugs and kisses from Canadian Great Auntie Sandra (aka Auntie Maple Leaf :D) on the special new arrival - I know you must be on cloud 9, and I can't wait to see pictures of Jacob. With his new quilt and with his Auntie Wendy:)

I'll send you a link later on, the one I used to learn how to finish off the end of binding, thanks to the dread pirate Shelley Rodgers, LOL!

Nice job on your first quilt! It takes some time to get that binding to meet up and mitered correctly. There are plenty of times that I gave up and did the same as you. Now, after a lot of practice, and after watching a few you-tube videos I do have the hang of it and you will too! Congrats on your nephew and your first quilt!
