Comments

Good morning,

I just wanted to make you all aware of something about leaving comments on my blog.  If you are a no-reply blogger, or are on Wordpress, I can't see your email address to reply to you.  Since the European Data Protection law came in, I also can't see who you are by clicking on your name, so I can't reply on your blog (if you have one).  I used to have the email addresses of Wordpress bloggers who commented often (Alex, Jane, Chris...), but I changed email programmes recently (my previous messages used to go into your spam!) and no longer have them.

So, what would you like me to do?  I can reply to your comments on my blog, but that relies on you remembering you left a comment and coming back to see if I've replied yet.  You could also give me your email address in a comment (I'd suggest leaving a comment, then leaving your email address in another comment, then I won't publish that to the blog).  Any other suggestions?

UPDATE: It seems that if you are no-reply, if you tick the box for "email me follow up comments", I can reply on the post and you will get an email notification.  HOWEVER, I don't know that you've done that unless you tell me!

UPDATE: Sarah found a link to tell you if you're a no-reply blogger and how to fix it:  CLICK HERE.  Thanks Sarah!  Feel free to share far and wide people!

I have to admit, I find the blogger comments section quite confusing! I think what I’m doing is replying via my google account. But then someone else told me via my blog that I was a no-reply blogger, and I can’t work out how to change that. I’ve tried ticking the box underneath to receive follow up comments via email, but I don’t know if you see that part?

Ok, let's see if it works! I can't tell that you've ticked the box. You are always no-reply. If you try clicking the "reply as" dropdown, can you select your blogger account?

I can’t reply as anything but my Google account, but I did an email that you’d replied, so that works! I’m not actually sure I’ve got a blogger account- maybe that’s where the problem is..

Ah ok, That means you've got a Google + account. Google + is evil and makes you a no-reply commenter! Do you use it? If not, i'd suggest deleting it.

I have a few commentators like that as well. I know a few of them on Facebook so I've ended up replying to them there. But I really hate not replying to the others :|

I used to reply with my Google account, but I think I've changed that to Name/URL.
Let's see if that works, shall we....

Rachel - I now can't reply to you! you are no-reply. I always could reply in the past...

And just in case, I've tried with Google and "Email Follow Up Comments"...

I've gone back to the Google account identity..

Dear Wendy

I'm happy to comment and for you to reply on your blog and then me to check your reply.

Best wishes
Ellie

Google+ changes accounts to “no reply” and you have to change it back to “Reply”. Don’t know why! But it happens all the time. I’m not using Google + but some who comment on my blog are. So sometimes those people won’t be “no reply” and then another time they are! You have to change it manually somewhere on the dashboard, I believe.
Mostly I can reply to those people because I already have their emails (as long as I remember they are no replyers), but I probably have replied to no reply emails with the email disappearing into the ether without knowing I haven’t actually “sent” them to these people! Frustrating!
So, after all this, I do hope I’m not a “No reply”er!! Tee hee! 😊
Hugs,
Barbara xx

I had so much trouble commenting on Blogger that I ended up creating a blog here just to link people to my WordPress blog... now I'm wondering if the "Sarah N (Google Account)" identity is actually linking to that or the stupid Google+ account I can't get rid of... (it used to go to the blog, but things change)

Wendy said...

Sarah N, it must link to your Google+ account as you are no-reply. There is something to click over there to get rid of the no-reply but I can't remember what it is as I don't have a Google+ account (about time Google scrapped them!)

It's a mare. I think the fact that some of us are on Wordpress doesn't help either.
My email address is ahall2410'at'aol.com with the 'at' being a @ to confuse the spam spiders.

Fingers crossed you should be able to reply to me now.

I had a search and all the "how not to be a no-reply commenter" articles were from ~2013 and the Blogger settings layouts have changed since then - eventually found an up-to-date one: http://alittlebitofemily.blogspot.com/2017/06/how-to-switch-from-no-reply-blogger-to.html

In my case, the account wasn't linked to my Google+ BUT I didn't have my email address visible...

I always have trouble with commenting on Blogger blogs. Sometimes it works if I go through Internet Explorer rather than Google but, if I forget, type a long comment and it disappears into cyber space, I don't have the time to do it again. I usually try to check back on blogs where I've left a comment by leaving the window open to remind me - but only until I get signed off (usually by my daughter).
I will copy this comment and, if it doesn't go through, I'll use the other browser.

I find that sometimes I can leave comments using my wordpress blog id and other times I have to use my Google account and sometimes I get to see replies to my comments and other times I don't. Good to know I'm not the only one confused here! When I began writing this comment I was automatically identified by my google account id so I selected the name/url option but I'm still not sure if you'll see this comment.

p.s. the option to receive follow-up comments via email only seems to be an option if you comment using a Google account ID.

Wendy said...

Mrs G - you are no-reply so I can't respond to you.

Isn't it frustrating! I too like to answer comments on my blog directly, but it seems that more often they are noreply-comments.
Thank you for the link, I am passing on your post by a link in my post.
I believe I am not noreply, but just in case, it would be good to know for sure, my email is
